When my grandfather arrived in San Francisco in late 1945 after three years of nonstop fighting during WWII, the city — packed with weirdos and artists and criminals and misfits — was a haven for him. Today it's much, much different. I wrote this essay about what San Francisco means to my family and what the future might hold. (I'm cautiously optimistic!)
